Establishing a Social Media Presence

December 16th, 2010 by admin

How Can Establishing a Social Media Presence on the Internet be Advantageous for the Business Owner or Marketing Executive?

As recently as only 2-3 years ago, very few business owners took much of an interest in becoming part of the growing number of social media or online business communities that have exploded across the Internet in recent years. Today however, most if not all business leaders, from the very smallest sole proprietorship to the very largest corporation are aware of the fact that the Internet is quickly becoming the average consumer’s first resource in locating and choosing the party they ultimately choose to do business with.

Electing not to participate in this expanding progressive electronic evolution, would and surely will, have a very severe negative impact on those businesses that are not fully invested in the experience.

The number of professional user groups on websites like Facebook and LinkedIn has grown more than 10 fold or over 1000% over the past two years. Dismissing this trend as pure fancy would be an unwise maneuver for any savvy business owner or marketing executive.

These professional networks can provide many benefits to every type of business. And, the benefits are not only applicable to the business owners; belonging to a social network also provides numerous benefits to all of the other members (and prospective customers) of the social network as well.

Benefits of Social Networking from the Standpoint of the Business Owner:

> Building or Increasing Company or Product Awareness – Social Media Sites provide a tremendous asset that allows custom tailored delivery of timely assessments of the types of services or products that a business provides, supplies, or offers. Additionally, press releases describing exciting new changes taking place within a business serve the business and the consumer alike. A business forum can also be a fantastic way to provide consumers with near real-time helpful information on the steps needed to be taken in the advent that someone may be experiencing some sort of a problem with a particular good or service.

> Observe and Track – Because Social Media Networks are designed to allow two-way communication between its participants, as a business owner you will have the luxury of seeing what other members of the online community may be saying about your brand, product, service and competition in virtually ‘real-time’.

> Engage (Current Customers) and Entice (New Customers) – Do not neglect the opportunity to involve existing customers and network subscribers in all manner of interesting and topical debates, quizzes and feedback forums and blogs. When doing so the benefit is manifold as this process has the added effect of enticing new customers and subscribers simultaneously as they get drawn into the discussions.

> Assist and Support – Here is the perfect opportunity for a business to demonstrate to its valuable customers in a substantial way, the benefits and advantages of using their goods and services. A great way to accomplish this is by providing valuable support in near real-time for any difficulty, problem, confusion, or question an existing customers or prospective customer may be experiencing with regard to the company’s products or services.

> Attract and Qualify – By including the appropriate keywords and tags in the social media site profile, blog posts, articles and forum discussions, the result will be many, many, new potential customers who will be directed to your content automatically by the search engines as they search the Internet for relevant information that happens to match your niche (and these prospective clients are pre-qualified as strong potential leads – they found you because you offer something they were searching for and are obviously interested in).

Increase Your Bottom Line – Marketing 101.

Creating a Call to Action:

(A Perceived Sense of Urgency)

> Give a deadline which is clearly defined and visible in many advantageous locations throughout your business website. One effective way to achieve this is to create a deadline by which time certain featured products or services must be purchased or agreed upon due to the fact that the price for that good or service is scheduled to and will increase beyond a specified date and time.

It is imperative that you follow through on the price increase as well. An angry customer is one who is told that a price will go up on a product, after which they rush out and purchase said product or service, and then low and behold the deadline passes and the product never changes price. No one likes being lied to. Stay true to your word. Honesty and Integrity go hand and hand with trust and loyalty. You can always discount products again at a later date.

> Always precede any price increase with many highly visible notices allowing your customer to take advantage of the current rate before the increase is scheduled to go into effect.

> Trial offers are also a fantastic way to allow a consumer the chance to try on a limited basis the product or service you are offering. (If you are offering truly outstanding products and services, then obviously you would want people to have a chance to learn that first hand.)

> For a Trial Period to be effective it should be offered as what is called a ‘No Risk’ trial. In other words let your customer know that if for some reason they decide they are not satisfied with your product or service within the trial period they can cancel the agreement without being charged for anything (no questions asked).

> Freebies are also a great way to entice people into trying a product or service. They are best used as an added feature to a package of goods or services that your potential customer may be contemplating buying.

> Be Creative, think of other ways to create that sense of urgency such as ‘If you order our system within the next ten days we are going to throw in at no extra charge 5 free video tutorials that speed you through the process of learning our course (regularly $99 value!)

*Remember these are merely examples; the only limit is your imagination!

DIY How To – Reformat your Windows XP Hard Drive and Re-Install Windows.

November 3rd, 2010 by admin

For the computer operator who may have never formatted a hard drive and installed an operating system before, this process can be a little intimidating.

Using the Windows XP installation disk to format the hard drive and then install the operating system is a process that an average computer user can handle but if it is the first time doing so there are a few things that need to be explained.

Before proceeding, ensure that you have the original packaging that came with your copy of Windows. To perform an installation you will need the license key that is usually affixed to the packaging that came with the Windows installation disks. Do not proceed with this procedure until you are certain that you have the proper license key to perform the install. You will not be able to install Windows without the license key.

Before doing anything at all determine if there is any data on the computer system that needs to be backed up first. Formatting the hard drive is going to completely wipe out any data that is currently on the system. It would be a good idea to look through the ‘All Programs’ menu in Windows (if it is currently installed and running) to see if there are any programs or applications that will need to be reinstalled after the format and Windows installation.

The original installation disks for any installed software or hardware will all be necessary once the Windows installation has been completed. Formatting completely and permanently erases all information on the entire hard drive. Any programs or applications will have to be completely reinstalled once you complete the installation of the Windows operating system.

It would also be advisable to take a look at the ‘My Documents’ folder as this is the most common place for personal information to be stored in Windows. It would not be a bad idea to back this folder up to an external storage drive, flash drive, or CD/DVD.

Another thing that will need to be confirmed before starting the format and install is the boot order of the computer system. The CD/DVD drive will need to be assigned as the first boot device to allow the computer to boot directly from the Windows installation disk. To change the boot order it may be necessary to enter the BIOS settings page to do so.

Depending on the manufacturer of the computer system or the motherboard, exactly which key is used to enter the BIOS can vary. Typically on Dell computers it will be the F2 or Del key, for HP it is usually the F1 or F2, Toshiba Esc or F1, and Sony F2 or F3. Rebooting the computer and paying close attention to the messages displayed during the POST can also usually provide the correct key to enter the BIOS.

After entering the BIOS use the arrow keys to navigate through the various menus until the ‘boot order’ is located. If the Hard Drive is the first boot device then the boot order will have to be changed to assign the CD/DVD as the first device. Be sure to save the changes when exiting the BIOS.

Place the Windows XP installation disk into the CD/DVD drive and then restart or power up the computer system with the disk in the drive. If the CD/DVD drive is the first boot device Windows XP Setup should start at this time.

At the ‘Welcome to Setup’ page press ‘Enter’.

Press F8 to accept the Windows Licensing Agreement.

You may be prompted with a ‘repair’ option if you already had windows installed on the machine before now.

To bypass the repair press ‘Esc’.

A list of all existing partitions and non-partitioned spaces will be presented.

Remove any existing partition(s) by using the arrow keys to highlight each existing partition and then pressing the ‘D’ to delete and then pressing ‘L’ to confirm the deletion. Do this for any other partitions that may be present. Once all of the partitions have been removed select the remaining non-partitioned space and press ‘Enter’.

Select the format option that is desired. Formatting using the NTFS file system (quick) will normally work well.

Format the partition by using the NTFS file system (Quick).

Depending on the size of the Hard Drive, the speed and the age, formatting could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Be patient and DO NOT power the system off during the format process, doing so can physically damage the hard drive.

Once the format process has completed, follow the on screen instructions to install Windows XP.

Allow up to 2 hours for this process to finish, be patient and congratulations you have successfully formatted your Hard Drive and installed Windows XP.

San Antonio Data Recovery | Digital Media Recovery

October 30th, 2010 by admin

Digital Media Data Recovery is not always possible in all scenarios but in the majority of cases significant recovery is usually possible if the attempt to recover the lost data is made soon after the data loss occurs.  Data can be lost in many different ways, the most typical are:

  • Accidental Deletion, Erasure or Format.
  • Operating System Failure or Software Crash.
  • Virus or Spyware Infection.
  • Malicious or Intentional Deletion, Erasure, or Format.
  • Physical Damage to Storage Medium, ie. Storage Media Has Been Exposed to Liquids.
  • Digital Media Device Experiences a Data Corruption Error.

Simple accidental deletion is by far the most common form of data loss.  In most cases if the affected storage device is brought in immediately following the incident there is a near 100% recovery rate.

The next most common data loss occurs when there has been an Operating System Crash or System Crash.  In this scenario chances are good that the data is still intact on the device, though it may not be accessible in the standard way.  A near full recovery should be possible in the majority of cases.

Virus and Spyware infections can also cause system failures and data destruction.  Data recovery in this instance varies depending upon how much damage has occurred.

Malicious destruction occurs when data is intentionally destroyed or deleted.  Once again, a data recovery in this case will vary depending upon the skill and thoroughness of the person responsible for the data destruction.  Recovery from this type of loss can range from a 100% full recovery, to a 0% total loss, depending upon the techniques that were used to destroy the data.

In every one of these cases, the sooner the affected hardware is brought in for analysis the better the odds are that a recovery can be made.  Even in the worst case scenarios, partial recovery should be possible.

Typical types of data that can be recovered include but are not limited to:  pictures, music, videos, spreadsheets, databases, letters, and documents of all types.

USB Flash Drive, Memory Stick, Thumb Drive,  or Pen Drive: These handy little devices are becoming more and more common.  They offer convenience, affordability and portability.  However, they can be susceptible to fairly frequent data corruption errors.  We offer complete data recovery services for deleted, formatted or corrupted digital media devices.

If you suspect your Digital Media Device has experienced a data loss:

The first thing you must do is immediately power down your equipment.  After you have powered your system down, remove the flash drive and place it in a safe dry environment until you can contact a data recovery service.  Using your flash drive for any other activity can permanently modify and/or destroy your data. This is the single most important step to minimizing the amount of damage incurred in a data loss scenario.

San Antonio Data Recovery | Hard Drive Recovery

October 30th, 2010 by admin

Data Recovery and/or Hard Drive Recovery is not always possible in all scenarios but in the majority of cases significant recovery is usually possible if the attempt to recover the lost data is made soon after the data loss occurs.  Data can be lost in many different ways, the most typical are:

  • hard driveAccidental Deletion, Erasure or Format.
  • Operating System Failure or Software Crash.
  • Virus or Spyware Infection.
  • Malicious or Intentional Deletion, Erasure, or Format.
  • Physical Damage to Storage Medium, ie. Scratched CD/DVD.
  • Physical Hard Drive Failure or Crash.  Catastrophic Hardware Failure.

Simple accidental deletion is by far the most common form of data loss.  In most cases if the affected storage device is brought in immediately following the incident there is a near 100% recovery rate.

The next most common data loss occurs when there has been an Operating System Crash or System Crash.  In this scenario chances are good that the data is still intact on the hard drive, though it may not be accessible in the standard way.

Typically the most severe data loss occurs when a system experiences a catastrophic hardware failure.  Because this type of data loss involves physical damage to the hard drive, in some cases portions of the hard drive can be rendered completely unreadable.  To recover data from a physically damaged hard drive requires very specialized equipment and techniques which means that this type of data recovery can be fairly costly.  Thankfully, hardware failure is the least common type of data loss.

There are two general categories for Data Recovery:

  • Logical Failure: The hard drive is mechanically sound – it spins correctly, the operating system recognizes the device, and all of the mechanical parts inside of the hard drive are functioning correctly. However, there is some reason that the data cannot be accessed through ordinary means. (This can include: accidental deletion or format, data corruption, operating system crash, or miscellaneous lost partitions or boot records.)
  • Mechanical or Physical Failure: The hard drive is somehow physically damaged. Some internal part within the hard drive is no longer functioning correctly. The hard drive may make clicking noises or is not recognized by the operating system any longer. (This can be a hard drive crash or control board failure.)

How hard drive data recovery works:

  • Logical Failure: The lost data is most likely still intact on the hard drive unless new data has been written over it. When a file is deleted or the drive is formatted, the data is not actually removed; the area where the data was stored is simply reallocated for new data storage and the file pointers are reset.
  • Mechanical or Physical Failure: The data may still be intact on the hard drive platters but is not accessible due to some mechanical malfunction. Recovering data from a physically damaged hard drive is a very delicate operation and needs to be performed using specialized equipment and processes.

In the case of either a logical failure or a physical failure there is a good chance that data can be recovered successfully if the attempt to recover the data is made immediately after the data loss occurs.

If you suspect your system has experienced a data loss:

The first thing you must do is immediately power down your equipment.  Continuing to use your system after a data loss for any other activity, even browsing the Internet, can permanently modify and/or destroy your data. This is the single most important step to minimizing the amount of damage incurred in a data loss scenario.

DIY How-To Defragment system hard drive

September 26th, 2010 by admin

There are many different causes for a computer system to run slow.  From the very first day that you unpacked the boxes, set up your new computer, and powered it on, it began to accumulate and store many different types of data.  Music, videos, letters, pictures, emails and more; the list gets larger and larger as more and more of our everyday lives become digitized to some degree.

All of this data is stored on the system hard drive and is managed by the computer’s operating system.  There are file allocation tables that store pointers to the exact address on the hard drive where each file, no matter how large or small, is stored.  The file’s name, size, type, date modified, date created, attributes,  status, along with about 15 other parameters all get saved there.  In addition to whatever data files the computer user stores on the hard drive, the computer’s operating system has literally hundreds of files that it uses to perform its various functions stored there as well.

As the operating system prepares to write data to the hard drive it merely looks for the first available empty region on the hard drive that it can find.  If the file to be stored is 10 megabytes in size and the first available empty region that is found contains at least 10 megabytes of contiguous storage space, then the entire file will be laid out there, in a contiguous fashion.  When a computer is new, this is what tends to happen at first since the hard drive is largely empty.  However, it doesn’t take long for this nice neat little scenario to change as files are constantly being stored temporarily and then removed as they are no longer needed.  Without getting too esoteric let’s suffice it to say that as time goes on the file structure becomes more and more ‘fragmented’.

As the operating system compensates for removed, relocated, completely new and resized data files, a single fragmented file can become spread out, in multiple pieces, across several sections of the hard drive.  Now imagine nearly every file the system needs to function becoming fragmented in this way.  That is exactly what happens to a computer’s hard drive over time.  Using a little imagination one can see how this would tend to cause the computer to run slower and slower as the system has to piece together, from various locations, all of the fragments necessary to retrieve an entire data file.

At this point you must be thinking, ‘there must be something I can do?”  Well, fortunately there is.  To return the computer’s hard drive back to a more organized state, similar to the way it looked when the computer was new and to reverse the ill effects of file ‘fragmentation’, we will be performing a process called, ‘De-Fragmentation!’  Of course I’m sure you had already guessed that is where we were heading.

Depending upon the size of the hard drive to be defragmented, the amount of data that is stored on it, the level of fragmentation and the speed of the computer’s processor, along with several other factors, a defragmentation can regularly take many, many hours!  The standard defragmentation tool that is included in the Windows disk utilities should be performed while the computer is idle.  This means that while Windows is defragmenting the hard drive the computer should not be used to perform any other functions.

Be sure to allocate enough time for the defragmentation so as to allow it to successfully complete a full defragmentation of the entire system drive.  You may wish to begin the defragmentation just prior to retiring for the evening thereby allowing it to run all night if need be.

It is also important that no other applications be running in the background during this process.  Take note if you use anti-virus or anti-spyware software, these programs are notorious for causing a defragmentation to abort prematurely.  Disconnecting the computer from the Internet and Network would also be a good idea.

Assuming all of the aforementioned conditions have been met it is now time to proceed to starting the defragmentation.

  • Click on ‘My Computer’.
  • Locate your System Drive (Typically drive letter C: is the system drive).
  • Place your Mouse Pointer over the System Drive and Press the Right Mouse Button.
  • From the Menu choose ‘Properties’ (found at the bottom of the menu).
  • This brings up the Local Disk C: Properties Sheet.
  • Select the ‘Tools’ tab.
  • Press ‘Defragment Now’ to start the Defragmentation Utility.
  • Be sure that the System Drive Letter is highlighted.
  • Press ‘Defragment’ to start the Process.

Well that raps it up.  Remember this process could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours so be patient and you will be rewarded with a snappier, more responsive computer system.

DIY How-To Virus or Spyware Removal

September 26th, 2010 by admin

Windows based PCs are notoriously susceptible to Trojan Viruses and Spyware infections.  This can be caused by a number of different factors but making sure that your system is fully updated at Microsoft’s update site is one of the best ways of preventing problems.  You can verify that your system is completely up to date by visiting Microsoft’s update site:

http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

This guide explains in detail how to get rid of a Trojan Virus or Remove Trojan Horse infections from your computer system.

If you suspect that your computer system may have become infected with a Virus or Trojan Horse Virus, this guide will step you through the process of downloading, installing and configuring a free version of anti-virus / anti-spyware software on your computer system.

Many good free Virus Removal Software titles are available online today that are quite effective in eradicating most Trojan Virus infections.  AVG Free is one that I have tried and have had good success in using.  The free version that is available to download online will delete Spyware, get rid of Trojan Viruses, and perform a Malware scan as well.  It is a great Spyware Removal Tool that I highly recommend.

You can find the AVG web-site here: http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

On the website you will find the option to either download the free version or a more advanced version for a fee.  After choosing the package that best suits your needs, download the virus removal software and save the file to your system hard drive.

Once the download has completed press ‘RUN’ to begin the installation.

You will be presented with the AVG setup program and for the most part you should be able to use all of the system default settings.

avg setup

Click Next to proceed.

The installer will need to download additional support files to complete the installation so be sure that you have an active Internet connection during the installation.  You may be prompted again to choose which package that you wish to install.  This decision is up to you.  Choose a version and press Next.

choose avg

Once all of the installation files have been downloaded you will be prompted to accept the license agreement.  As long as you agree with the terms simply check the box and hit Accept.

avg license

You are now given the choice of either the Standard Installation or a Custom Installation.  For most typical users the standard installation should suffice but feel free to experiment with the custom installation if you wish to manually choose which components you would like to install.

installation type

Enter your name to activate the Free License and press Next.

activate license

Choose a destination path (the default path is normally fine) and press Next.

(If you have chosen a custom installation you will decide which components to install at this point.)

component selection

Choose whether or not you would like to install the AVG Security Toolbar or set Yahoo as your default search provider.  Press Next.

The software may force your web browser to close but we’re almost finished with the installation at this point.

As the installation process concludes you will be prompted to ‘Optimize Scanning Performance’.  This takes a few minutes to complete but helps improve the performance of future scans.

optimization scan

After the optimization process is complete a full system scan should be performed.

AVG may have minimized itself to the taskbar so you might have to open the AVG Command Console by either clicking on the taskbar icon or using the desktop shortcut.

Once you have opened the AVG Command Console select ‘Computer Scanner’ from the menu on the left and then select ‘Scan Whole Computer’ from the menu that opens.

scan whole

This could take some time so you may wish to engage yourself with some other activity and check back periodically to monitor the progress.

With any luck any infections your system may have harbored will have been detected and quarantined.

Keep in mind removing Viruses and Spyware can be tricky; it is possible that not every infection will have been detected by just this one attempt at removal.

DIY How-To Troubleshoot Software Errors

September 26th, 2010 by admin

If one of the software applications that you use on a regular basis suddenly generates an error message and will not allow you to continue you can try this simple guide to correcting the issue.  Use this guide at your own risk.  You should have a general understanding of how to install and uninstall applications and programs on your system if you plan to use this guide. If you aren’t sure what you are doing, please call and speak to one of our technicians before using these procedures.  Techheads is not responsible for any data loss or other damage that may occur from using the following procedures.

Techheads cannot be held responsible for any problems that may result from the use of this checklist – if you are unsure of what you are doing please call us at 210-260-0045.

  1. If you are experiencing a problem with a software application that was recently working properly, but now generates an error message when you try to use it; the first thing to do is retrace your steps.
  2. Have you installed any new software on your system between the last time you were able to successfully use the broken application and now?
  3. If so, there may be a conflict between the old software and the new software that you have installed. Consult the documentation that accompanied the new software and the formally working software to see if there is any mention of restrictions or conflicts.  Also, verify that your computer hardware meets the minimum requirements for the application(s).  You can find this information listed on the software installation guide(s) or packaging.
  4. If you cannot think of any new software that has been installed or that might be causing a problem then uninstalling and reinstalling the program might correct the issue.  If you feel that no new software has been installed and you wish to uninstall and reinstall then skip to step 9 otherwise continue to step 5.
  5. Uninstalling any new program(s) that have been installed recently may free up your application to start working again. If you would like to try doing this be sure that you have at least a basic understanding of how to install and unistall software applications on your system before continuing.
  6. Proceed to uninstalling the suspect application(s) – being very sure to use the proper uninstallation procedure.  If you are not familiar with the steps used to uninstall programs and applications from your system do not try these procedures.
  7. After uninstalling each new application that you suspect may have been causing an issue; completely power your system down and wait at least 2 minutes before powering back up.
  8. If after uninstalling any new software applications installed recently, and you have made sure to reboot your system, you are still getting an error with the problematic software; you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the application itself - But WAIT, read on.
  9. Before you uninstall your application make sure that you have the installation disk and guide that will be needed to reinstall your software.  Read the installation guide carefully!  Verify that all the installation disks are present and that you have the proper license key to perform a re-installation after you have uninstalled the application.  Failure to do verify these facts can lead to a situation where your software cannot be reinstalled.
  10. Ok now, if are sure that you feel comfortable knowing that you have everything you will need to reinstall the software, you can go ahead and uninstall your application now.
  11. If you are not familiar with the process that is required to uninstall software on your system then you shouldn’t even be trying to use this guide.
  12. After the uninstall is complete – power the system all the way down. Do not use restart. Do a complete system shutdown and wait at least 2 minutes before you power the system back up.
  13. You can now attempt to reinstall your application and hopefully your software will be working once again.

DIY How-To Upgrade System Memory – Increase RAM

September 26th, 2010 by admin

Increasing system memory is usually the cheapest and easiest way to increase system performance.  However, not every system can be upgraded and it is possible that you may already have the optimal amount of system memory for your hardware/software configuration.  The first thing to do is determine how much memory is currently installed in your system and how much total memory your system is capable of utilizing.  Depending on the operating system that you are using the amount of optimal memory varies.  As a general rule of thumb Windows XP users will want to have 3 gigs for optimal performance and Windows Vista 3 gigs for the 32 bit version and 4 to 8 gigs for the 64 bit version.  Windows 7 should also use 3 gigs for the 32 bit version and 4 or more for 64 bit.  (Windows 7 will actually run faster than Vista with the same amount of memory installed.)  To find out how much memory your system currently has installed use one of the following methods:

  • Right-click on the ‘My Computer’ icon, and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
  • Look under the ‘General’ tab to find the amount or RAM in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB).  Remember 1000 MB’s is equal to 1 GB.

sp

  • Another way to find system memory is to Click Start-> All Programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> System Information.  Then look for ‘Total Physical Memory’ in the panel on the right.

si

One of the easiest ways I have found to determine the maximum amount of memory a system is capable of utilizing is to use the ‘memory advisor’ tool that is located on the www.crucial.com website.  To use the tool simply enter the manufacturer and model number of your PC.  After entering your PC manufacturer and model number you will be given detailed information regarding the maximum memory capacity for your particular system, and the type of memory and maximum size of memory boards and configurations that are available for your system.

Another option to determine maximum memory capacity would be to consult the website of the manufacturer of your PC for details regarding your particular system.  Note:  If you have a custom built machine you will need the specification sheet that accompanied  the motherboard that is currently in your system to find out the details concerning maximum memory capacity, memory type, speed, etc.  In the event that you do not have this information you will have to open the computer case and find the model number of your motherboard.  The model number is normally printed on the face of the motherboard but can be difficult to find.  Assuming you are able to find the model number, use it to search the manufacturers website for details about the memory specifications for that motherboard.

Before purchasing new memory be careful to ensure that the memory type that you are buying is correct for your system.  There are quite a few different types of memory available, you will want to be absolutely sure that the memory you purchase will work in your system.  If your system requires DDR or DDR2 you will need to buy two matching memory boards to perform an upgrade.  With DDR3 you will more than likely need three matching boards.  (These details can vary however, depending on the motherboard.)

There are also many different memory speeds available for each type of memory.  If you are planning on completely replacing the old memory you should be able to use faster memory for your specific memory type, if it’s available.  If you are planning to add new memory to existing memory you should try to find memory that is the same speed as the existing memory.

Installing Memory Upgrades

Installing memory can be tricky so take your time and don’t try to force a memory stick into your system if it is not easily snapping into place.  There are slots on the memory that will only allow it to be inserted in one direction so be sure to line them up when installing.  If the memory board does not seem like it is fitting in the socket correctly try turning it around.  If the slots in the memory do not match the breaks on the motherboard memory socket then you have the wrong type of memory for your system.

Removing the old RAM Memory Boards

  • Be sure your computer is completely shut down.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the computer.
  • Unplug any other cables that are connected to the computer including telephone lines or networking cables.
  • Remove the access panel or computer cover.  You may have to remove some screws on the rear of the computer or on some systems press a release button (usually on the bottom of the case).
  • Locate the old memory on the motherboard.  You can identify the memory by examining your new memory and looking for similar memory boards installed on the motherboard, usually near the CPU.
  • Before attempting to remove the old memory, be sure to release the latches that are used to hold the memory firmly in place.  You will find these at both ends of each memory board.
  • Grasping the memory firmly in the middle, carefully pull the memory board in a perpendicular direction, away from the motherboard until it slides out.  IF THE MEMORY IS NOT EASILY SLIDING OUT CHECK THE LATCHES TO BE SURE THAT THEY ARE COMPLETELY OPEN.

Installing New RAM Memory Boards

  • Depending on the type of memory you are installing be sure that you are installing the memory in the correct slots.
  • DDR and DDR2 will normally be installed in slots 1 and 3 or slots 2 and 4.  (Many times these slots will be a different color, either blue or possibly yellow.)
  • DDR3 will be installed in slots 1, 3 and 5 or slots 2, 4 and 6.
  • If you are installing new memory but plan to add your new memory to the existing memory and do not plan to remove the old memory then be sure that the LARGER memory modules are installed in the first slot that is closest to the CPU.  (for DDR, DDR2, DDR3 be sure the first memory stick of the largest set of memory boards is installed closest to the CPU and the matching ones are installed accordingly).
  • Be sure to line up the slot in each memory board with the break in the memory slot.
  • Press each board down until it snaps into place.  (Both latches on the ends of the memory board should lock into place.)

Close Your Computer Case or Cover

  • Replace the cover or panel that you removed earlier.
  • Replace any screws that you may have removed or loosened.
  • Plug any cables you removed earlier back in to the computer.
  • Power up your computer and pay careful attention to the boot screens to be sure that there are no error messages during the boot-up process.
  • You may see a message indicating that the amount of system memory has changed.  This is normal.

Troubleshooting – If you are Experiencing Problems with the System not Powering Back up Properly or Locking Up.

  • Ensure that all of the your memory boards are fully seated in the sockets and that they are latched firmly on both ends.
  • Be sure that you have the boards in the correct slots.  (If there are any boards of different sizes then the largest memory board must be in the slot closest to the CPU.)
  • If you are using DDR, DDR2, or DD3, you must use matching memory boards and they must be installed in groups and in the correct slots.
  • If you have added new memory to older existing memory your new memory may be a different speed than the old memory.  Some motherboards will not allow using memory of different speeds.  Try using only the new memory.

DIY How-To Hardware Troubleshooting Guide

September 26th, 2010 by admin

Frequently a system that will not power-up may have inadvertently become unplugged or possibly a cable may have become loose.  The following checklist is intended to eliminate a power connection or disconnected cable as the cause for a system not powering up.

  • Check to be sure that all power switches are in the on position. Check the back of the computer case. Many times there will be a power switch on the back of the computer near the location where the power cable attaches to the computer.  Be sure that it is in the correct position.
  • Check to see that the voltage switch is set correctly. In the U.S. it should be set to 110v/115v.  You will find the voltage switch located on the power supply, which is normally located on the back of the computer also near the power cord.
  • Make sure that the power cord to the computer is plugged securely into the back of the computer.
  • For laptops make sure that the transformer is plugged into the laptop securely.
  • Trace the power cord from the computer back to the receptacle in the power strip or wall and make sure that the receptacle is actually ‘hot’.  You can test this by taking a known working appliance such as a lamp and testing the actual receptacle that the computer is plugged into to make sure that it is actually working.
  • If you see a power light or other L.E.D.’s on the computer case lighting up but the monitor is not showing a display then you may not have power to the monitor or the video cable may have become disconnected.  Make sure that the power cable to the monitor is firmly plugged into the back of the monitor. Trace the power cable from the monitor back to the receptacle and be sure that it is connected to a live outlet.
  • Check to see if the monitor video cable is secured to the back of the monitor and that the other end is securely attached to the video port on the computer.
  • Still no luck? Try unplugging and re-plugging all cables. Remove all cables from the computer including power, monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer, network, and any other attached devices. Make sure that you know where the cables go back again! If not, label them.
  • Now re-plug all the cords and cables and try powering up again.
  • If you are still experiencing problems please call and speak to one of our certified technicians.  210-260-0045.

Organic SEO – The Google 'Sweet-Spot'

September 26th, 2010 by admin

SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization, is the process of optimizing one’s website to improve the position in which the website will appear within the search results obtained from a search engine based on specific keyword phrases.

To operate a business today without the benefit of an online presence is very difficult. The convenience and abundance of information available over the Internet has created an expectation that any serious business should have a website providing at minimum contact information and a basic description of the services and/or products they have available.

Today nearly every business regardless of size or field of business has some sort of web site or blog available online. For the consumer this is a fantastic resource, available 24 hours a day and in the privacy of the home as well.

For the business owner having a repository to post detailed information about the services one provides, business philosophy, product catalogues, pictures, videos, and detailed descriptions of products including prices, provides a fantastic marketing opportunity.

Herein lies the rub; every single competing business owner knows these same facts. Even for somewhat obscure business’ there can be literally thousands of (if not more) competing web sites, providing similar products or services, vying for the same top billing spots.

When the average consumer decides to look up a business on the Internet 69.5 percent of the time he or she will use Google to perform the search (according to research firm Hitwise for f.y.2008). Yahoo and Microsoft make up the majority of the remaining search queries with AOL coming in a distant 4th (although AOL actually uses Google’s results).

According to marketing research conducted by Chitika, a search based advertising network, the top ‘organic’ position in Google drove 34.35% of all traffic in the sample. This was almost equal to the combined traffic from positions 2 through 5, and was more than the combined total of positions 5 through 20. Organic spot number 1 is worth almost exactly double what organic spot number 2 is worth, and the drop is precipitous thereafter.  This is what I like to call the Google ‘Sweet Spot’.

Achieving that coveted number 1 organic spot on Google for a specific keyword phrase can double the amount of traffic a website can expect to receive over the second position. For an online business today, with margins as small as they are now, this could be the difference between business success and business failure.

How to Hire the SEO Company

September 26th, 2010 by admin

If one is considering hiring an outside firm to perform SEO services (Search Engine Optimization) to help market their Online Business or Website there are several questions that need to be asked and some general concepts that should be understood to help make an informed decision while choosing a qualified firm.  Below is a list of 10 basic rules to SEO and hiring the right firm.

  1. The first rule to SEO is a good solid website design.  Make sure that the firm that is being considered has discussed and is aware of the many on-site SEO techniques that are essential to ensuring the website itself is SEF (Search Engine Friendly).  If the website is not designed utilizing the correct SEF strategy than it is much more difficult and in extreme cases may not be possible at all, to achieve significant SEO results.  SEF url’s, the correct keyword density, and logical Meta-Tag and Meta-Description information are a few of the on-site SEO pieces that should be employed before any other strategies are embarked upon.
  2. There are many companies out there that are offering ‘backlinking’ as a means of achieving SEO, and although back-linking can be employed as part of an SEO strategy, it is merely one piece of the puzzle so to speak.  Back-linking alone will never get a website to the top of Google, Yahoo or Bing, especially if it is merely random links strewn out across the Internet with no plan or context.
  3. Ensure that the firm that is being considered understands how to use backlinking in its proper context and effectively so that valuable resources are not wasted on a strategy that will not produce results.
  4. Ask to speak to a client that has had successful results through the use of the firm’s SEO strategy in the past (ask for references).
  5. Proper SEO should include high quality content included in the body of the website and posted at various authority external websites that link back to the target website.  This is the most effective way to ensure the website is viewed as an authority in it’s area of expertise.
  6. Ask to view reference sites that include content that has either been authored by the SEO firm or has been written for them for their client(s) by them.
  7. Determining the correct keyword phrases to target is the next most important aspect to effective SEO.  Choosing either keyword phrases that are already in an overly competitive niche or do not have significant search volume can render any SEO attempts ineffectual.
  8. A good SEO firm will provide a keyword analysis in the area of expertise for the web site’s key area of business to provide suitable options as to which keyword phrase or phrases should be focused upon to achieve the most effective SEO results.
  9. Be sure to ask for an analysis of competing websites and an estimate of the expected amount of improvement related to Google, Yahoo, and Bing and the cost in doing so along with an approximate expectation of the duration of time it will take to achieve the improvement.
  10. Most importantly, be sure to get everything in writing and in signed contract form.

Newest SEO Strategies – Stay Up To Date

September 26th, 2010 by admin

SEO is an evolving art or science, depending on how you look at it and is actually a bit of both.  Over time the Search Engines have refined the way in which they grade or determine which websites should be given the highest standing in the SERPs (search engine results pages).

What may have worked 3 years ago to push a website to the top of the search engines will not work the same today, and most likely will not work the same a year from now.

There is no way of knowing precisely how Google or Yahoo or Bing calculates their SERPs exactly but a solid strategy proven through trial and error does exist.

For the purpose of this article I will only discuss those techniques that would be considered ‘white hat’ or you might say ‘officially approved’ of by the Internet community.

There are many sources out there perpetuating the idea that you cannot get indexed quickly or rank near the top using only ‘white hat’ SEO.  This is simply not true.  In many cases site owners actually damage their ranking status and lower their SERP position by trying to use some ‘quick’ ‘Black Hat’ trick to get their website into the top position over night.

In some cases there could be a temporary increase in page rank and SERP position for some of the ‘black hat’ strategies that exist out there but in the long run those ‘quick ranking’ tools are only an illusion.  Over time the search engines weed out the ‘trash’ and give high rank and good SERP placement to those websites that genuinely provide quality content, outstanding service, or fill a vacant ‘niche’.  Usually, it is the websites that manage to accomplish all three of these requirements that sit in the number one position.

Ok everyone the lecture is over.  Let’s start talking about the things that we can do to get our website ranked high and stay at the top.

First, foremost and most importantly is the basic design and structure of the actual website itself.  A carefully planned out, user friendly, logical, and straightforward landing page or home page is critical.  Remember, this is the page that your first time visitors usually see first and it is the one that the search engines ‘bots’ see first as well.

‘You never get a second chance to make a first impression.’

Actually I tend to believe that the search engines are far more forgiving than a typical Internet customer.  The search engine’s bots will keep coming back to crawl your site no matter how bad it sucks.  Your website could be full of broken links, scripting errors, spelling errors and grammatical mistakes and the bot doesn’t care at all.  Well actually it does care, it reports all of these things back to search engine HQ.

Because it is only a bot, and bots do not have feelings, the bot does not hold a grudge for long and in a few days or sometimes weeks, the bot will come crawling back to you again (and yes, the pun is intended).

In all seriousness however, if a new ‘human’ guest lands on your site for the first time and runs into those same kind of issues: broken links, scripting errors, misspelled words or poorly worded content pages, they are more than likely not going to spend the time to come back and see if the website has been updated or corrected.  That particular ‘potential customer’ has just become a ‘statistic’ (definitely in the red and not in the black).

You will hear a lot of talk about ‘Meta Tags’ and ‘Meta Descriptions’.  These are actually words or phrases that are included in the website’s ‘code’ that are only visible to the search engines.  The Meta Description however, many people see quite frequently but probably didn’t know what they were looking at when they saw it.

I Googled ‘Search Engine Optimization’ and the top 3 results are listed below:

google results

What is placed in a Web Page’s Meta Description is normally what the search engine will use to display in the area just below a Web Sites title in the SERP.  I have highlighted this information in the first listing above.

Using ordinary English and being descriptive in the Meta Description on each page of the Website will result in a good looking SERP listing.

Meta Keywords are also important.  Meta Keywords are the keyword phrases that best target the specific page that they are used upon.  These keywords should be targeted and be related to the content contained within the page body.

Keyword density refers to the ratio of a how many times a specific keyword phrase appears within a body of content to the total number of words that are within that content.  In the early days of SEO this number was very critical to ranking high is the SERP’s.  Today this number is much less important and while the appearance of a targeted keyword is important within article content, keywords phrases should be used in a natural sounding context and not ‘overloaded’ or ‘stuffed’ into the content.

Other practices that should be completely avoided are: the use of hidden content and the use of content that is completely unrelated to the overall website subject matter.  The technique of using very frequently searched for keywords but keywords with no relationship to the actual website they were embedded within was once a very common and effective tool to increase SERP rank.  This does not work today so do not be tempted to try using it.  Some Internet Marketers might try to convince unwary website owners to engage in this technique; do not bother as it will not be effective.

Use the H1 header tag to focus each web page on a particular keyword phrase.  Embedding the keyword phrase that best summarizes the content of a particular web page in the H1 header tag helps the search engine organize the content of your website and rank the importance of the content of the pages.  And, of course, if you have chosen a topically relevant and appropriate Keyword Phrase, it will help your Website guest know they have found the right page.

Maintaining a structured, easy to navigate, uncluttered and not overly complicated web design results in lower bounce rates.  A confusing or very unorganized web design will turn off most Internet Surfers really quickly.  The typical Web Surfer is expecting to find a website with information that is easy to find, well organised, and truly informative.

It can be highly useful to actually layout the design of a proposed website on paper before any computer design work even begins.  Using a graphical ‘flowchart’ also greatly helps keep things organized and makes the design much easier to understand for anyone who may not have been around during the conception of the design but will eventually be involved in the design, coding or implementation of the final project.

A flowchart is basically just a simple graphical representation utilizing directional lines, graphical symbols and pointer arrows that is utilized to depict the design characteristics of a websites menu-flow, page-order, and logic path.

In designing any website probably the most important thing to keep in mind during the actual development of the content is to include as much useful, high quality, informative data, about the business, industry, or focal point of the website as possible.  The more original content that appears within the body of the website the better the search engines will like it.  Your target market will appreciate this as well.

In addition to highly descriptive content describing the products and services that a website is providing, a glossary of terms related to the industry the website specializes in is a good addition to any website as well as a FAQ’s (frequently asked questions) page.

When it comes to SEO, there can literally never be too much information included in a website as long as it is all completely original unique content (or where appropriate, references are duly noted).

Original content means copying pages of data from the Wikipedia, or using content pages found on other websites or even ‘lifting’ excerpts of content directly from other websites simply will not work.  Plagiarized content ‘lifted’ from other sources without express consent can also be a source of legal concern.

This is one place where Google in particular, is extremely good at detecting copied content and will give no SEO advancement for such material included in one’s website.

If a business owner is not able to author original content themselves it would be advisable to hire someone to write original content for the website.  Original content is just as important if not more important than any other aspect of achieving good SEO results.

Additionally, there are many so called ‘article submission’ websites that are available to host uploaded content articles written about almost any subject.  As a matter of fact it is very possible that you may be reading ‘this’ article on an article submission site at this very moment.

The purpose, in SEO, to the process of uploading and submission of articles to these types of websites is twofold:  first, popular article submission sites have thousands of guests each day which is a huge potential market for readers of the submitted articles and second, as an author one is allowed to create a signature that can include a link that directs traffic back to the website of the author’s choice.

Posting articles with content that relates to the target website and then including links that have the keyword phrase tagged as the anchor text either embedded within the article or as part of the author’s signature, is an excellent way of building good high quality back-links.

Blogs are another great place to submit articles where there is a good chance for a posted or submitted article to be viewed by a large audience.  Blogs also allow the author of the article to receive feedback through comments left by readers of the blog.

This brings us to the topic of links, and more specifically ‘back-links’.  The term back-link refers to a hypertext link, which is located on an external website that links, references, or points back to one’s own website.  A ‘back-link’ is made up of two parts:

  1. The ‘URL’ of the destination site (or the site the link is pointing to).
  2. The ‘anchor text’ which is made up of the ‘keyword phrase’.

An example of a ‘back-link’ written in html code would look like the following:

<*a href=’http://www.yourwebsiteurl.com’>Your Keyword Phrase<*/a>

When displayed this link would appear as:

Your Keyword Phrase

‘Your Keyword Phrase’ would be an active link pointing to the ‘url’ that follows the ‘href’ in the link statement above. (Please be sure to remove the asterisks – I used them only to prevent the link from becoming active.)

In the early days of the Internet back-linking was the holy grail of SEO.  One merely needed to acquire many, many links pointing back to one’s website to achieve a very high position within the result set of a search engine.  At that time it was mainly just the quantity of back-links that determined a websites PR and not the quality of the incoming links.

Those days, I’m afraid, are long, long, gone.  The search engines are much ‘smarter’ today and the number of back-links is not nearly as important as the ‘quality’ of the back-link in determining whether or not the back-link will provide any benefit to SEO at all.

To help prevent the misuse of link farming and other types of link manipulation the use of the ‘no follow’ attribute was created and has been implemented.  When the use of the ‘no follow’ attribute is applied to a link it directs the search engine to award no PR or ‘PageRank’ benefit to the landing site no matter how high the ‘PageRank’ of the referring site may be.

The use of this attribute has only been somewhat effective in reducing the amount of spamming and ‘spamdexing’ that is used to try to boost SERP position.  The practice of simply blasting back-links out all across the Internet is on the decline as its effectiveness diminishes.

There is however, some benefit to having a good deal of back-links inbound to the target site.  Today it is more a matter of how to acquire numerous good high-quality back-links than simply an exercise in who can accumulate the most.

At this point it becomes necessary to discuss PR or PageRank.  PageRank is the method of grading a websites ‘authority’ or importance on the Internet.  The process was developed primarily by researcher Larry Page (hence the name ‘Page’ Rank) at Stanford University as part of a research project.

Page and another researcher named Brin later founded Google and took the technology with them and it is still the basis of the Google search engine and search tools to this day.

A website’s PageRank is a numerical weight ranging from 0 to 10 that is assigned to a website based upon, among other things, the quantity of and the PageRank of the external websites that link in or have inbound links that refer to the target site.  A website that has many inbound links from websites that have high PageRank themselves will in turn be given a high PageRank as well (at least that was the way it worked before the implementation of the no-follow attribute.)

According to Google’s website the PageRank is calculated by ‘considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms.’

Needless to say trying to understand an algorithm this complex exactly will never be possible but there are still many things that can be done to boost a sites PR and help improve its placement in SERPs.

We have discussed the importance of a high quality website design, the need for very informative original content, article submissions, back-linking and PageRank.  This would be a good time to begin discussing the process of determining keywords and keyword phrases.

Selecting the correct keywords and keyword phrases to focus the SEO efforts on can be the determining factor as to whether or not it will be possible to successfully achieve effective SEO.  It is very important to take the time to do some research on competition and keyword popularity.

In general the most common terms that describe a business would be the best place to start.  For instance if you own a business that provides roofing contracting services keywords that you might consider focusing on might be ‘Roofing Contracting’ or ‘Roofing Contractor’.

Google provides a tool that displays the average number of searches for selected keyword phrases.  You can find this tool by searching Google for ‘keyword tool’.  After entering the keyword or keyword phrase and pressing the ‘search’ button a page of results will be displayed that indicate the number of times the particular keyword(s) has been searched for on average each month.

Also displayed are many other similar phrases that most closely match the keywords that were searched for.  Take the time to scroll through this list and many good alternative phrases can be found in this way.  Choosing the phrase that has the most searches and most closely matches the website’s line of business is a solid practical approach.
