Social Networking

social networkingSocial Networking / Social Networking Service - This terminology broadly describes a myriad of interactive online services that provide as their primary function a way for Internet users to communicate, interact, and relate to one another.  General features of these services typically includes a profile that the user fills out describing themselves, their interests, hobbies, in some cases physical attributes, age, sex, religion, etc.

Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace to name only a few, have become ubiquitous; appearing on TV, in Movies, and frequently in the news. Generally, social networking allows like minded individuals to share ideas and communicate with one another about common interests. In the classic case of Facebook for instance, it allows former classmates separated over time or distance to reconnect. More recently sites like LinkedIn have started becoming increasingly popular. LinkedIn provides business associates a forum to communicate with one another and even look for employment opportunities or potential employees.

Another very popular category of social networking is dating sites such as Match or EHarmony. These sites allow unmarried, divorced or single adults to locate other unmarried individuals and communicate or possibly make arrangements to meet outside of the Internet. It's theorized that more adults meet in an online environment today than meet in singles bars or any other setting.

The use of Facebook and Twitter to create a brand image for a brick and stone business has dramatically increased within the past two years. Most, if not all large and midsize businesses now all have a Facebook page and Twitter accounts.
